So apparently there is this debate about the Texas state ban on same-sex marriage because people are saying it managed to ban marriage entirely. YES! See this is where nitpicky grammar becomes IMPORTANT people. I'm psyched.

"This state or a political subdivision of this state may not create or recognize any legal status identical or similar to marriage." Does "identical or similar to marriage" include, well, marriage?
I guess I'm confused about what "identical" to marriage means. You could think of it like an identical twin, similar but different. Or like "exactly the same" in which case it would mean marriage and anything like marriage. Hm.

I'm totally going to throw "Batman" into all my boring LJ entries from now on.

I think the best book for banned book week--because it not only deals with challenging books but is also a frequently challenged book itself--is Farhenheit 451. I think when we're dreaming up our BBW decorations, we should start with F451 for inspiration. It totally fits. I would suggest playing the movie every year, but let's face it, the movie was crap. (I heard awhile ago that Tom Hanks was going to make another version. WHAT'S THE DEAL, HANKS? Get on that.)
Of course, penguins could also be the BBW mascot. Everyone loves penguins, right? That is, unless they're gay penguins. Because the picture book And Tango Makes Three has been the most banned book for the last three years. It's totally adorable! Based on a true story. Plus, I don't see how looking after an abandoned baby is objectionable. I'm sure two male penguins leaving a tiny baby penguin to die would be a real crowd pleaser.
#6 on last year's list was The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky. This is another one I think is great and totally recommend.
And, as always, I must mention The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain. This was the book that got me involved with BBW. In middle school, our English teacher was banned from teaching it. She taught us Fahrenheit 451 instead (which, in retrospect, was pretty awesome of her). Then when I actually got around to reading Huck Finn, I really couldn't believe that people banned it for being racist. The whole point of the book is to critique racism. Yes, there's that word but by banning it for use of the word, you're saying that the meaning of what is being said is not important. Basically, it's teaching our children that poor reading comprehension is acceptable. I'm not for that!
Read banned books!
